OUR STORY

After moving here in 2013 and slowly acclimating to the culture of Asheville, I decided that I wanted to mesh my desire to write, passion for photography, and my wanderlust for travel. With Asheville literally at my fingertips on a daily basis, and the ever growing tourist options, what better way to do that than with a travel website all about Asheville and the surrounding areas from an outsider's perspective.

So welcome to An Outsider's Asheville. Visit often, as we are always adding new and relevant content.

THE RICH HISTORY OF ASHEVILLE, NC

Asheville, NC named after Samuel Ashe in 1797 was originally a county seat named Morristown. Buncombe County was officially formed in 1792. During the height of the Civil War Asheville remained relatively unscathed while still contributing men to the war efforts. By October 2, 1880 the railroad paved its way through Western North Carolina eventually being bought out by the Richmond and Danville Railroad company which then became know as Southern Railway.  With the addition of the railroad Asheville had slow but steady growth as textiles and manufacturing opportunities flooded the area.  In the period between 1889 and 1895 a wealthy socialite backed by steamboat and railroad wealth named George Washington Vanderbilt relocated to the area and built his Châteauesque-style mansion named Biltmore Estate.  Unfortunately he died in 1914, just a few short years after the completion of Biltmore.  Asheville has continued to grow by leaps and bounds with festivals over the years and culture that billows from downtown and the surrounding areas. Many flock here for the incredible views, unique restaurants, and some in search of a quieter, southern lifestyle.  No matter the reason your find yourself in Asheville, NC we hope you stay a bit and enjoy all that Asheville has to offer.
